Originally the inside  housed a glass ampoule containing a highly concentrated liquid gas.  The ampoule broke on impact and the liquid gas combined with the atmosphere, created a deadly fog.

This item is a museum quality replica that has been cast in iron from an original fragment I found on the Somme, France.  These are exact in every way and the only way you can tell it is not an original is the fact that I am telling you it is not!
