Magda's Dress 2.12088

Jay purchased this dress back in 1990 (he was still in the Army then) from a family near Vilnus, Lithhuania. It had belonged to the guy's mother who was Magdalena Nowacki or "Magda" as every one called her. She was of Polish origin and was lucky enough to have survived the holocaust and died in 1987. That is all the information I have on her and this item.

This has been in Jay's personal collection since he bought it, and is now offering it for sale to cover some unexpected bills that have come in.  Please do not offer any crazy bids or trades, to be honest he does not really want to part with it, but needs must may.

Any inspection is welcome, Jay is offering a lifetime guarantee on it's authenticity

23rd HQ Special Troops "Ghost Army" Patch 2.11701

The Ghost Army was a United States Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. The unit were given a unique mission within the U.S Army: to impersonate other U.S. Army units to deceive the enemy. From a few weeks after D-Day, when they landed in France, until the end of the war, they put on a "travelling road show" utilizing inflatable tanks, sound trucks, fake radio transmissions and pretence. They staged more than 20 battlefield deceptions, often operating very close to the front lines. Certain elements of it still remain classified today.

Ghost soldiers were encouraged to use their brains and talent to mislead, deceive and befuddle the German Army. Many were recruited from art schools, advertising agencies and other venues that encourage creative thinking. In civilian life, ghost soldiers had been artists, architects, actors, set designers and engineers.

Although the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops consisted of only 1,100 soldiers, the contingent used equipment pioneered by British forces such as dummy tanks and artillery, fake aircraft and giant speakers broadcasting the sounds of men and artillery to make the Germans think it was upwards of a two-division 30,000 man force. The unit's elaborate ruses helped deflect German units from the locations of larger allied combat units.

The unit consisted of the 406th Combat Engineers (which handled security), the 603rd Camouflage Engineers, the 3132 Signal Service Company Special and the Signal Company Special..

Visual deception

The visual deception arm of the Ghost Army was the 603rd Camouflage Engineers. It was equipped with inflatable tanks, cannons, jeeps, trucks, and airplanes that the men would inflate with air compressors, and then camouflage imperfectly so that enemy air reconnaissance could see them. They could create dummy airfields, troop bivouacs (complete with fake laundry hanging out on clotheslines), motor pools, artillery batteries, and tank formations in a few hours. Many of the men in this unit were artists, recruited from New York and Philadelphia art schools. Their unit became an incubator for young artists who sketched and painted their way through Europe.603rd.

Sonic deception

The 3132 Signal Service Company Special handled sonic deception. Aided by engineers from Bell Labs, a team from the 3132 went to Fort Knox to record sounds of armoured and infantry units onto a series of sound effects records that they brought to Europe. For each deception, sounds could be “mixed” to match the scenario they wanted the enemy to believe. This program was recorded on state-of-the-art wire recorders (the predecessor to the tape recorder), and then played back with powerful amplifiers and speakers mounted on halftracks. The sounds they played could be heard 15 miles (24 km) away.

Radio deception

"Spoof radio", as it was called, was handled by the Signal Company. Special Operators created phony traffic nets, impersonating the radio operators from real units. They were educated in the art of mimicking a departing operator’s method of sending Morse Code so that the enemy would never detect that the real unit and its radio operator were long gone.

Atmosphere

To complement existing techniques, the unit often employed theatrical effects to supplement the other deceptions. Collectively called "atmosphere", these included simulating actual units deployed elsewhere by the application of their divisional insignia, painting appropriate unit insignia on vehicles and having the individual companies deployed as if they were regimental headquarters units. Trucks/Lorries would be driven in looping convoys with just two troops in the seats near the rear, to simulate a truck full of infantry under the canvas cover. "MP's" (Military Police) would be deployed at cross roads wearing appropriate divisional insignia and some officers would simulate divisional generals and staff officers visiting towns where enemy agents were likely to see them. A few actual tanks and artillery pieces were occasionally assigned to the unit to make the "dummies" in the distance appear more realistic.

WW2 Allen West Observers Helmet 2.11076

Allen West Ltd had factories in Lewes Road, Coombe Road and Moulsecoomb way Brighton. The  factories produced many products used in wartime, both in WWI and WWII. In WWI there was the Mills Bomb Grenade and in WWII there was the naval ship degassing gear to counteract the Nazi magnetic sea mines; control pillars for use with anti-aircraft predictors; submarine ventilation fan switchgear; seaport crane gear controllers; brake switchgear and numerous electric motor starters for wartime production factories.

A gatekeeper and a policeman at the Lewes Road factory entrance were killed by the crash of an aircraft, following an air collision of friendly aircraft. Brighton and South Coast areas were raided several times by Nazi 'Hit and Run' aircraft which flew across the Channel from their bases in France.

To warn of these attacks observers were based on tops of high buildings; they operated local sound 'Pips'. One observer was based on the top of the Coombe Road factory. All factories had their individual air raid shelters, and my particular one was situated in a Home Guard Blockhouse at the Lewes Road works.

1 Pound Note For North Africa with Arabic Message On The Reverse 2.10984

These were air dropped over  Alexandria and Cairo in November and December of 1942.

"To our brother, the Muslim" and "If you examine this note you will remember the time when you could buy ten times its weight in gold. this is because the note was guaranteed by a great empire with all its power and wealth. by now its power is gone, its wealth has vanished like wet paper. So what is the value of this note today? You certainly know the truth. Every day that the war, started by Great Britain, continues the power of the Empire diminishes - every battle lost causes further devaluation of the British Pound. Soon the day will come when a street beggar will not even accept it as a gift. It is God's will that Britain should disintegrate. It will happen soon"

    Crabtree Discharger CR-01
This is an absolute perfect museum quality replica of the ultra rare Crabtree discharger.
Made in brass to the exact specification as the original, however we have omitted to add the "Crabtree" logo to prevent fraudulent sale of these
A simple device with two spikes which depressed the plungers in the fuze, when applied. It could be screwed on to the fuze boss and it had a ring fitted in its top to which a piece of string could be tied, thus allowing the Bomb Disposal Officer to extract the fuze from a safe distance. When the No 25 fuze was introduced, the two spikes were removed and the Crabtree was still used to extract the fuze.

    WW1-2 Caltrop Resistance Spike CT-01

Caltrops date back to the Medieval period.
First used to take down horses, the macabre idea was used during WW1 for the same thing, plus slowing the men down long enough for the heavy machine guns to get a trace on them.
During WW2 The OSS & SOE working closely with various resistance groups, used Caltrops again, this time for puncturing tyres and as shrapnel in home made devices.  I have even heard tales of them being launched from catapults and sling shots.
